Quick answer: ETPU (expanded thermoplastic polyurethane) is a high-performance bead foam with outstanding rebound and energy return. It is light, durable and bouncy, which is why it pioneered the modern super-foam running shoe. It is also used in protective gear and high-rebound cushioning.
ETPU stands for expanded thermoplastic polyurethane. Like EPP and EPS, it starts as small resin beads that are expanded and fused inside a mould. But the base polymer — thermoplastic polyurethane — gives ETPU exceptional elasticity. Each bead behaves like a tiny spring, so the foam returns a high proportion of the energy put into it.
| Property | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Base polymer | Thermoplastic polyurethane |
| Density range | ≈ 150–400 kg/m³ |
| Rebound / energy return | Very high |
| Repeated impact | Excellent |
| Cold performance | Stays resilient in cold |
| Weight | Light for its performance |
| Recyclability | Recyclable (thermoplastic) |
Two things stand out: ETPU's energy return is higher than EPP or EVA, and it stays soft and resilient in cold weather, an advantage that matters for winter sports and outdoor footwear.
ETPU became famous as the material behind the first super-foam running shoes. Bead foams like ETPU are lighter and more responsive than traditional EVA, and they do not pack out as quickly. The result is more cushioning and more energy return per gram of material.
Manufacturing shoe midsoles from ETPU requires precise tooling — see ETPU sports shoe sole moulds and ETPU moulds with texture.
For durable, reusable parts at a lower cost, EPP is often the alternative — see EPP molds.
| Property | ETPU | EPP | EVA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rebound | Very high | High | Moderate |
| Durability | Excellent | Excellent | Packs out |
| Cold resilience | Excellent | Good | Hardens |
| Cost | High | Medium | Low |
ETPU sits at the performance end of the range: the highest cost, but also the highest rebound and the best cold-weather feel. Materials are supplied as raw beads — see ETPU raw materials and EPS, EPP and ETPU bead supply.
ETPU stands for expanded thermoplastic polyurethane. It is a bead foam made by expanding and fusing thermoplastic polyurethane beads in a mould.
For performance, yes. ETPU has higher rebound, better durability and keeps its resilience in cold weather, whereas EVA packs out over time.
Yes. Because it is a thermoplastic, ETPU can in principle be recycled, though collection infrastructure for expanded bead foams is still developing.
Protective gear, sports components and premium cushioning products. Anywhere high rebound and repeated impact resistance are needed, ETPU is a strong candidate.
