Quick answer: Choose EPS for low-cost single-use packaging and insulation, EPP for repeated impact and heat resistance in automotive and protective parts, and ETPU for high-rebound performance such as premium shoe soles and sports products. The right choice depends on impact profile, temperature, weight target and budget.
EPS, EPP and ETPU are all expanded bead foams, but their base polymers give them very different performance. Understanding where each one wins prevents over-specifying (and over-paying) or under-specifying (and failing).
| Property | EPS | EPP | ETPU |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base polymer | Polystyrene | Polypropylene | Thermoplastic polyurethane |
| Density range | 10–40 kg/m³ | 15–200 kg/m³ | ≈ 150–400 kg/m³ |
| Impact | Single-impact, can crack | Multi-impact, recovers | Very high rebound |
| Heat resistance | ≈ 75–80 °C | ≈ 120 °C | Moderate |
| Recyclability | Recyclable (code 6) | Recyclable (code 5) | Recyclable |
| Relative cost | Low | Medium | High |
Typical uses: appliance packaging, TV and electronics packaging, fish boxes, waffle pods, insulation boards. Explore EPS molds.
Typical uses: bumper cores, seat bases, tool boxes, helmets, reusable containers. Explore EPP molds.
Typical uses: athletic shoe midsoles, protective sports gear, high-rebound cushioning. Explore ETPU/EPO molds.
Answering these five questions narrows the choice quickly. Where a project sits between two materials, prototyping both is usually the fastest way to a confident decision — see our guide to custom foam parts from concept to production.
Per kilogram, yes — EPP resin and processing cost more than EPS. However, because EPP parts are often reusable and last far longer, the cost per use can be lower in the right application.
EPP is the standard choice for automotive seat bases because it absorbs energy repeatedly and tolerates the temperatures inside a vehicle.
ETPU and EPP are both used for midsoles. ETPU offers the highest rebound for premium performance footwear, while EPP is a strong, durable alternative.
They are all shaped on steam moulding machines, and in many cases the same machine platform can be used, but tooling, bead handling and process settings differ for each material.
