Quick answer: EPP (expanded polypropylene) is stiffer, more heat resistant and far better at repeated impact, while EPE (expanded polyethylene) is softer, more flexible and cheaper. Use EPE for soft cushioning and protective sheets, and EPP for structural, reusable and high-impact parts.
Both EPP and EPE are expanded bead foams, and both are lighter and more protective than solid plastics. The difference comes from their base polymers: EPP is made from polypropylene, EPE from polyethylene. That single change drives everything else — stiffness, heat resistance, rebound and cost.
| Property | EPP | EPE |
|---|---|---|
| Base polymer | Polypropylene | Polyethylene |
| Stiffness | Higher | Lower, more flexible |
| Impact recovery | Excellent, multi-impact | Good, softer |
| Heat resistance | ≈ 120 °C | ≈ 70–80 °C |
| Chemical resistance | Good | Moderate |
| Relative cost | Higher | Lower |
| Resin code | 5 (PP) | 4 (LDPE) |
See EPP molds for these applications.
Ask what the foam must do. If it must hold shape and survive impacts, choose EPP. If it must cushion softly and cheaply, choose EPE. Where a project needs both, designers often combine a stiff EPP structural part with a softer EPE interface.
For a broader comparison including EPS and ETPU, see EPS, EPP and ETPU bead supply and our guide to EPP mold vs EPS mold.
Yes. EPP is stiffer and far more resistant to repeated impact. EPE is softer and better suited to gentle cushioning.
For cheap, soft, single-use cushioning, EPE is usually better. For reusable, structural or high-impact packaging, EPP is the better choice.
Yes. EPP carries resin code 5 and EPE carries code 4. Both can be recycled where collection is available.
Food-grade EPE grades exist and are used for food packaging. As with any material, specify a food-grade grade for food-contact applications.
