EnglishAn EPS waffle pod mould produces the expanded polystyrene void forms used under waffle raft concrete slabs. The mold defines the pod's footprint, rib geometry and height adjustment features, so builders get consistent voids, fewer formwork hours and a lighter slab. Adjustable-height pods — often from roughly 150 mm up to 300 mm and beyond — let one pod range cover several slab designs.
A waffle raft slab pours concrete over a grid of beams formed by voids between the pods. The pods stay in the ground permanently; only the ribs and slab are concrete. Compared with traditional strip footings and removable formwork, pod-based slabs offer:
EPS is used because it is light, cheap, dimensionally stable and strong enough to survive site handling and the concrete pour, while providing a defined compressible void underneath.
Slab design software assumes standard pod footprints and rib spacings. The mold must hold these dimensions over millions of cycles, because a few millimetres of variation on a pod multiplies across thousands of units into real slab deviations.
An adjustable pod is usually molded as a base plus a height extension, or with a living-hinge or interlock feature that lets the same product serve several slab heights. The mold must produce clean, strong interlocks that survive site stacking.
Pods are stacked on pallets and shipped to site. Mold design must include stacking ribs and nests so pods do not deform under load in a hot truck or on a sunlit slab.
Some designs include features for drainage or for the void to compress under heave. These are molded features, so they must be built into the cavity from the start.
| Application | Typical pod height | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard residential raft slab | ≈ 150–225 mm | Most common sizes in volume production |
| Deep beam or heavy load slab | ≈ 225–300 mm | Often produced with height extensions |
| Special or adjustable range | Multiple, from one tool | Uses interlocking extension features |
Exact sizes follow the slab engineering standard used in each market (for example AS 2870 in Australia, where waffle raft construction is widespread).

Typically 13–20 g/L. This gives a pod light enough to lay by hand but strong enough to survive site stacking and the concrete pour.
Yes, if the product is designed as a base plus extension, or with an interlocking height feature. This is the main reason adjustable pod molds are popular with producers who serve several slab standards.
Yes. The pods are permanent void forms and remain in place after the concrete has cured.
A well-maintained aluminum pod mold running on a modern shape molding machine can produce several hundred thousand pods per year. Cycle time is usually a few minutes per shot, with multiple pods per shot for smaller sizes.
