EnglishChoose an EPP/EPS shape molding machine by matching four things to your product: platen size (largest mold you will run), steam and cooling capacity (density range you will mold), control system (repeatability and data logging), and the accessory set — fill guns, vacuum system, ejectors and mold frames. A machine that is right for light EPS packaging will often be under-specified for high-density ETPU or automotive EPP parts.
Platen size sets the largest mold you can mount. Always size for your future largest part, not your current one, because molds are the long-lived asset and machines are usually replaced later. Check daylight (opening between platens) against mold depth plus ejection stroke.
Steam pressure and flow decide which materials and densities you can mold. Light EPS packaging needs modest steam; ETPU and high-density EPP parts need higher pressure and faster, more controllable steam delivery. A boiler that is adequate today can become the bottleneck when you add higher-density products.
Modern machines control steam pressure, vacuum, cooling and fill by recipe, and log each shot. This matters for two reasons: process stability (fewer rejects) and traceability, which automotive and safety-critical customers increasingly require.
The accessories often decide day-to-day productivity more than the base machine.
| Accessory | What it affects |
|---|---|
| Fill guns (partial and full) | Bead distribution and fill consistency in thin or complex cavities |
| Vacuum system | Faster fill, tighter fusion control, shorter cycles |
| Ejector sets and strippers | Clean demolding of thin or textured parts |
| Mold frames and adapters | How quickly you can swap between existing molds |
| Bead conveying and silos | Steady bead supply and correct aging time before molding |
| Energy recovery | Steam and cooling water use, running cost per part |
Filling guns deserve special attention: their number, position and control determine whether thin sections of a cavity fill completely. Our EPS filling gun page shows a typical design, and steam chambers for EPS molds shows how the steam side of a mold integrates with the machine.
| Material | Steam demand | Typical products |
|---|---|---|
| EPS | Low–medium | Packaging, insulation, construction voids |
| EPP | Medium–high | Automotive parts, helmets, sports goods |
| ETPU | High | Midsoles, elastic parts |
| EPO | Medium | Reusable packaging, sporting goods |
If you plan to run more than one material, buy the machine and boiler for the most demanding one, and use recipes to run the rest efficiently.
Usually yes, provided the steam and cooling systems are specified for the more demanding material. Recipes control the rest.
Steam capacity. A boiler sized for light EPS becomes a bottleneck as soon as the plant adds EPP or ETPU products.
Very. Vacuum filling improves bead distribution in complex cavities, allows lower residual air in the part, and typically shortens cycles.
It depends on cavity geometry. Thin, long or heavily ribbed cavities need more fill points. The mold designer and machine supplier should agree this together.
